Joan Dugger

Joan Dugger was hired as a new full-time P.E. faculty member in 1966 and immediately assumed the lead role in women’s athletics. She coached EvCC women’s sports teams (field hockey, basketball, softball and tennis) from fall of ’66 through fall of ’74.  Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly for the growth and development of women’s athletics, and started the women’s track, volleyball, and gymnastics programs during her tenure.  Only EvCC, Centralia and Skagit Valley College had a full schedule of women’s intercollegiate sports in ‘68-’69, which was seen as a major accomplishment as Title IX federal legislation mandating equal levels of participation by men and women did not occur until June of 1972.

Her 1967 tennis team won the state title, and her basketball team placed 2nd in the 1969 & 1970 NW District College Women’s Basketball Tournament. She coached the 1972 field hockey team to a second place state finish.

Dugger remained at the College until she passed away in 1984; she was inducted posthumously into the Northwest Athletic Conference (formerly Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) Hall of Fame in 1992.
