Larry Walker

Larry Walker was hired in 1985 at Everett Community College to be the head men's basketball coach and part-time physical education instructor.  From the very beginning, Larry never ceased to provide outstanding service to the college and its students for his 34-year career.  Larry took over a basketball program that was previously on a two-year hiatus and in a short time re-established its respectability in the Everett community and as a coach was a teacher of life's lessons, a mentor, a life-long friend, and an inspiration for many of his former players to become teachers and head coaches.  Larry's son Darrell and other former players (Shawn Frank, Chad McGuire, Andre Piper-Jordan, and Corby Schuh)  have already been inducted into the EvCC Athletics Hall of Fame including his 1994-1995 basketball team.

As the Athletic Director, Walker was instrumental in growing the EvCC athletic department into one of the largest in the NWAC.  During his tenure he started softball and women's soccer.  Softball won a North region title in 2006 and were runners up in the NWAC Championship game in 2011. Women's soccer had a stretch of qualifying seven straight years for the NWAC playoffs and went on to win an NWAC championship in 2014. He also reinstated track and field and cross country that won a combined five NWAC Championships between the men's and women's programs.  As if that was not enough, he reinstated the baseball program in 2001 which had been non-existent for two decades.  The program under the leadership of Larry and head Coach Levi Lacey went on to win five north region titles and won the NWAC Championship in 2013, which had not been accomplished since fellow Hall of Famer, Marv Cross's team did it back in 1966.

Larry was an active leader within the Northwest Athletic Conference having served two terms on the NWAC board of directors, including one year as the chair, and additionally served and chaired a number of sport committees.  He played a tremendous role in the construction of the Walt Price Student Fitness Center, which is one of the premier facilities in the conference, having hosted the NWAC men's and women's basketball championships for the last seven years.  In honor of Larry's achievements and service to the college the basketball floor was officially dedicated and named Larry Walker Court in 2018.

Larry is enjoying his retired life with his wife Carey of 48 years, coaching and watching their grandkids play football, baseball, soccer, golf, track, and basketball.  At certain times of the year he gets to watch basketball every day of the week, and we know that Coach Walker would not have it any other way.
