Trojans Win Home Opener

The Trojans hosted the Spokane Sasquatch on Sunday, a program that has qualified for post season play the last 9 seasons, winning the east region championship in 4 of those years.  Last season EvCC traveld to play Spokane and lost by a score of 8-0.  For the sophomores, this was a game of redemption and a chance to prove that the Trojans belong among the NWAC's elite programs.

Everett dominated possession in the opening 25 minutes of the match, but a mistake in transition led to a Spokane goal by Jared Mehaffey in the 27th minute.  Even as the Trojans continued to control the match in the first half, they were only able to muster 3 shots on goal against the stout Spokane defense.  The EvCC defense held strong as well, and held Spokane to just two shots, neither of which were on frame.  The Sasquatch entered the half with a 1-0 lead.

The 2nd half began with a burst from freshman forward Dullo Jallow, a Mariner HS grad who found the back of the net for the Trojans (his first collegiate goal) in the 47th minute after a beautiful cross from Marcos Arellano.  Then more pressure from D. Jallow forced an own goal from Spokane as a rocket shot deflected off of a Spokane defender in the 49th minute to give EvCC a 2-1 lead.

In the 55th minute, secured another goal after a series of great passing.  A long ball from the back line set up Cade Cooke with a long ball of his own ahead beautifully to Marysville Pilchuck grad Siloe Galvan who beat the defender and sent a shot in that was deflected by the Spokane keeper straight up in the air.  Again it was Dullo Jallow who found himself in the right place, out leaping a defender and getting a head on the ball to score his 2nd goal of the game.

Spokane would keep the match close and responded with a goal in the 68th minute to cut the lead down to 2-3, but the Trojans closed out the game strong scored three goals in the final 8 mintues of the match.  Freshman, Cascade HS grad, Gerardo Lopez scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd, freshman Mamadi Sarr from Banjul, Gambia scored his first collegiate goal in the 84th minute, and sophomore Kyle Sandoval out of Bothell sealed the game with a stoppage time goal.

The Trojans improve to 1-1 on the season, and will face Bellevue College on Wednesday.  The next home game will be on Saturday, September 8th in the North Region opener versus rival Edmonds Community College.
