Women's Hoops Start 2-0

Tacoma, WA - The 2019-2020 EvCC Women's Basketball team is 2-0 after a strong showing at the Tacoma CC Titans Classic this weekend.  On Friday night, the Trojans faced the host Titans and cruised to a 66-50 win behind a stout defense that forced 22 turnovers and held Tacoma to 25% shooting from the floor.  Returning sophomore and last year's North Region MVP, Hannah Hezekiah led all scorers with 22 points.  She also added 10 rebounds on 7 of 19 shooting.  Another sophomore, Morgan Marshall chipped in 18 points, 5 steals, and 6 rebounds, shooting 8-13 field goal percentage.

On Saturday afternoon, Everett faced another opponent from the the West Region, the Highline College Thunderbirds, an NWAC playoff team from last year.  Everett started the game out hot, and jumped out to a 20-9 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Sophomore Kelsey Mellick scored 9 of those points and was well on her way to a solid game when she scored another 9 in the second quarter to give EvCC a 39-19 halftime lead.  The Trojan defense again looked solid allowing just 4 first half field goals.  Everett continued to shoot the ball well in the 2nd half going 8-14 as a team from the field in the 3rd quarter and building to a 25 point lead at 59-34.  Highline's offense came alive in the 4th quarter, putting up 29 points, but it was too little too late and the Trojans came away with the 78-63 win.  Kelsey Mellick finished the game with 34 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.  Two other Trojans scored in double figures, Hannah Hezekiah put up 17, and freshman Alexa Martin added an even 10.

Everett will enjoy a few days off before taking to the court next Saturday against Christian Faith in the home opener.  Tip off is set for 6:00pm.
