Season Cut Short

Season Cut Short

The 2019-2020 basketball season was cut short for all sixteen women's basketball teams that qualified for the NWAC Championship tournament.  The threat of spreading the coronavirus in large group public spaces first postponed the NWAC tournament on March 4th after the first three games of the tournament were played at Everett CC.  With half an hour to tip off before the Everett CC women's team were scheduled to take on the #1 ranked Umpqua CC Riverhawks out of Roseburg, OR, the NWAC in conjunction with the Snohomish County Health District, the CDC, and Everett Community College decided to postpone the tournament.

After 48 hours the NWAC identified a new location for the tournament at Linn-Benton CC in Albany, OR where Coronavirus cases seemed to be far less rampant.  The tournament was set to resume on March 12th and run through March 15th and banned all spectators allowing only team personnel, and essential tournament operations staff.  Despite the precautions, the Oregon Health Authority and college presidents decided that canceling the tournament was in the best interest of everyone's health and followed the community action taking place to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The EvCC Women's Basketball team finished their season with a 15-15 overall record and as the #4 team in the North Region, qualifying for the postseason after winning a play-in game over rival Edmonds CC.  Two Trojans earned All North Region Honors, Morgan Marshall (all defensive team) and Hannah Hezekiah (1st team).  Hannah will find herself in the Everett CC all time record books, scoring 1,101 career points which is the third most all time and only one of three EvCC women's basketball players in the 41 year program history to eclipse 1,000 career points mark.  Another sophomore, Kelsey Mellick is also in the record books.  She scored 843 career points (7th most all time) and set a single game scoring record of 50 points last season against Bellevue.

In his 34th season at Everett, head coach Chet Hovde reached his 525th career coaching win (432nd at EvCC) and qualified for the playoffs for the 14th time.
