A Win to Start the Season

A Win to Start the Season

Olympia, WA - The Trojans got their first win of the 2022 campaign in big fashion with a 5-1 victory over South Puget Sound CC.  After a 1-0 win over Green River in a scrimmage last week, EvCC found themselves down a goal early, conceding to the home Clippers in the first three minutes of the match.  But, the goal served as a wake up call and Everett responded with a goal of their own five minutes later off the foot of red-shirt freshman Lucy Soriano-Sanchez.  Soon after that goal, sophomore Teeghan Banfield scored her first collegiate goal, giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead.

The first half continued to be all Everett putting up 13 shots to South Puget Sound's 1, and increasing the lead with goals by sophomore transfer Amy Gonzalez-Rios and a second goal from Soriano-Sanchez to put the Trojans up 4-1. The second half yielded less offense for EvCC, but the defense held solid allowing only two shots on goal.  Freshman Elizabeth Martinez, who scored the lone goal in the 1-0 scrimmage victory over Green River, capped the scoring of the evening with a goal in the 80th minute.  Sophomore goalkeeper Yaritza Pelayo recorded two saves and conceded just the one goal early on in the match.

The 5-1 win marks the largest margin of victory for second year coach Nicole Nsa. She will prepare her team for one final scrimmage against Evergreen State Unviersity before the regular season continues next week.  Everett will face Treasure Valley College in an early morning match at the NWAC Friendlies next Wednesday at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.
