Martinez Scores a Pair of Goals in Win over Titans

Team celebrates after a goal scored.

Tacoma, WA - On Wednesday last week, the Trojans enjoyed their largest margin of victory since 2015, defeating Treasure Valley CC by a final score of 10-0.  Everett got off 21 shots on goal and sophomore goalkeeper Yartiza Pelayo recorded her 3rd career shutout.

The test would be more difficult on Saturday traveling to Tacoma to face a program that defeated the Trojans 4-0 a season ago and advanced to the NWAC quarterfinals.  Freshman Elizabeth Martinez got things going early with a goal in the 13th minute when a cross into the box by Kaley Chang was not collected by the Titan keeper, and Martinez capitalized.  Eight minutes later the Trojans earned a corner kick that was taken by Lucy Soriano-Sanchez.  The ball was placed right in front of the goal amongst a collection of bodies.  Sophomore Giovanna Occhiallini got off a clean shot that found the back of the net putting the Trojans up 2-0.

The Trojans would go into the half with that advantage playing well defensively, only allowing 3 shots all half, two of which were on target which starting keeper Yaritza Pelayo was able to collect.  Tacoma started the second half with a resurgence of energy, putting pressure on the Trojan defense, but EvCC held strong and increased their lead to three in the 67th minute when a Paige Runcorn shot was deflected by the keeper, and again finding herself in the right place at the right time was Elizabeth Martinez who put it away for her 7th goal of the season.

Everett finally conceded a goal in the 74th minute off of a Tacoma corner to miss out on another shutout, but 10 minutes later Paige Runcorn got her second goal of the season on a nice ball up field from Martinez.  Runcorn chased it down, made one touch around the keeper and found the back post.  By the final whistle, Everett outshot Tacoma 16-12 and recorded 8 saves to Tacoma's 7, all of which made by Pelayo.

The win marks three in a row, with some much needed momentum heading into next weekends first home match against NWAC power Peninsula College.  The Pirates are 1-0-1, most recently coming off of a 2-0 win over Portland CC at the NWAC Friendlies.
