Trojans Get Gators in Three

The 2-6 Trojans hosted Green River College on Friday night, a team desperately searching for their first win of the 2019 season.  It would be the first single match of the season for both of these teams allowing the players and coaches to focus exclusively on the match at hand.

Everett started set one off with five straight points and sustained a comfortable lead until mid set when Green River went on a six point rally and claimed a 13-16 lead.  After an EvCC timeout, the Trojans responded with two straight points and later using a 4 point rally to reclaim a 20-19 lead.  The final moments of the first set would prove to be exciting, featuring seven ties and six lead changes.  The Trojans were able to string together two consecutive points after a 26 all tie, when Green River suffered from two attack errors (14 in total on the set) to take set number one by a final score of 28-26.  Stasia Kaahunui and Savannah Horton lead the Trojans with three kills apiece and Bailey Gardner added five assists.

Set 2 was also close throughout, neither team ever leading by more than 4 points.  After trailing early Everett used a five point rally (their largest of the set) to claim a three point lead at 9-6.  The Gators later responded with a five point rally of their own to take the lead back at 17-16.  After a Savannah Horton kill, to tie the game back up, the Trojans would never again trail, building their lead back up to four and eventually taking set number two by a final score of 22-25.  Everett played a clean set with only 4 errors and a .273 hitting percentage.  Marina Kane had three kills for the Trojans and Ana Sulantay lead the team with 4 kills in the set.

Coming off of winning the first two sets, EvCC had all the momentum in the third set, never trailing and building the lead out to as much as nine before securing the 20-25 set and match win.   Stasia Kaahanui lead the Trojans with 7 kills and 2 aces for 9 total points and also led the team with 13 digs. Savannah Horton and Ana Sulantay each chipped in 6 kills, Bailey Gardner tallied 12 assists, and Kasey Dale recorded 10 digs.

With the win, the Trojans pick up win number three on the year, and are set to host South Puget Sound CC (3-5) on September 5th at 7:00pm.
