Eastbound and Down for NWAC Playoffs

Eastbound and Down for NWAC Playoffs

Everett, WA – The Trojans advanced to the post season for the third time in the past four seasons and will do so as the #2 seed from the north region after knocking off the north region champs Peninsula on their home floor.  Entering the contest Everett had already clinched an NWAC tournament berth but could have finished as low as 4th had they lost.  Sophomore Leon Sayers had a career high 27 points to lift the Trojans over the Pirates 85-71.

After missing the playoffs last season, a no playoff season in 2021 due to COVID, and cancelled playoffs in 2020 with the emergence of COVID, the Trojans are hungry to get back in the hunt for the programs first ever NWAC Title.  This may be one of the most balanced and talented teams that head Coach Mike Trautman has had in his seven seasons.  Five players average double figures in scoring, and on any given night, eight different players could go off for 20 or more points.

Because of the balance, not many individuals stand out statistically among the top in the conference.  JT Smith's 3FG% ranks 4th at 46.7% and Tucker Molina's 4.2 assists per game ranks 2nd.  However as a team, the Trojans rank high in many statistical categories. Everett has the 2nd most made three-point field goals in the NWAC, and is shooting at the 4th highest clip at 38%.  They also rank 2nd in rebounds with 42 per game and 2nd in assists per game with 18.7.  EvCC's 86.6 points per game is also the 6th highest in the NWAC. Defensively, they rank highest in defensive rebounds, 2nd in blocked shots per game, and 2nd in opponent's field goal percentage, holding the opposition to 39.9% shooting.

As the #2 seed from the north, the Trojans will draw the #3 seed from the east in the opening round of the NWAC playoffs in Pasco at Columbia Basin College.  That team happens to be Spokane, a program that Everett has played twice and beaten twice earlier this season.

The game will be held on Friday, March 10th at 6:00pm.  Tickets and livestream information can be found on nwacsports.org.
