Trojans Claim the T-Trophy with Wins Over Edmonds

Lynnwood, WA - Trojan softball was back to north region action on Wednesday after a 1-2 trip in Yakima over the weekend.  The matchup was with rival Edmonds College, rescheduled from March 19th after inclement weather caused a need to postpone.  EvCC jumped out early putting up three runs with two outs.  Three singles capped off by a Savannah Ah Mook Sang-Frank contributed to the big inning and set the tone for the remainder of the game.  Kaylie Hoskins got the start for Everett, and although she gave up a leadoff walk, proceeded to strike out the next 7 batters she faced.  The Trojans put up another two runs in the 4th inning sparked by a lead off solo home run by catcher, Madison German her 2nd of the season.  Jaz McMiller singled, and then advanced to third by way of a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.  She then came home to score on a sac fly RBI from Charis Jones.  Hoskins finally gave up a  couple of runs in the bottom of the 5th on a couple of hits and a walk, but she worked out of the jam striking out her 12th batter.  Everett tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the 7th with an Isabelle Hansen solo home run, to extend the lead out to 6-2.  The Tritons threatened in the bottom of the 7th and got the bases loaded after two more singles and a walk, but again Hoskins worked out of the jam and popped up the last batter for the final out of the game.

Kaylie finished her 7th complete game of the season and gave up 5 hits, 6 walks, and 2 earned runs with 16 strikeouts.   Meleana Turner had another nice day at the plate for the Trojans, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Jordyn Lono and Kaitlyn Bridgewater also had multiple hit days going 2 for 4 and 2 for 3 respectively.  As a team the Trojans hit .355 and hit for power with two doubles and the two home runs.

Game two would end up being the longest game of the season for the Trojans, lasting over 3 hours and taking 10 full innings to decide the victor.  The home Tritons jumped out in the lead putting up 3 earned runs on  freshman Riley Swanson, through the first 2.1 innings.  Kaylie Hoskins came back into the game and limited the damage that inning, leaving two runners stranded. The Trojan bats had trouble getting going.  EvCC was held scoreless through the first three innings but finally cracked the scoring column with two runs in the fourth.  Again, Isabelle Hansen hit one over the fence leading off the inning and another run scored when the bases were loaded and Madison German was hit by a pitch that brought Mele Turner home after she got on via a walk.

EvCC tied the game up in the top of the 5th pushing a cross a run on two hits, but left three stranded and could not take the lead.  As if by a bad omen, Edmonds made the Trojans pay and reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the 5th scoring two runs on 3 hits.  Trailing 5-3, Isabelle Hansen came up huge once again with a 2-run double in the top of the 6th after Charis Jones and Jordyn Lono got aboard with a single and a walk.  Hansen was left stranded at second, and heading into the bottom of the second, Kaylie Hoskins really went to work in the circle.  Over the next four innings, Kaylie gave up just two hits and struck out 9 batters.

With the score still tied in the 10th inning, the international tie break was enacted, putting a runner at second to start the inning.  Right away the Trojans capitalized with a Leiloa Bustamante double down the right field line that brought Ivane Aholelei around to score.  Charis Jones then laid down a beautiful bunt single to put runners at the corners.  Jordyn Lono just missed a home run with a long fly ball to right field that was caught and allowed the runner from third to tag and score.  Izzy Hansen then came to the plate and blew the game open with her second home run of the game, 3rd of the day, 4th of the season, and 11th of her career.

With a comfortable 9-5 lead Hoskins took over with an Edmonds runner on 2nd to start the bottom of the 10th.  Kaylie struck out the first batter she faced, but back to back singles allowed the runner to come around to score.  As if taking it personally, Hoskins then struck out the next two batters she faced to seal the win.  She finished the game pitching 7.2 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, one walk, and struck out 19 batters to tie her career high.  The last time she struck out 19 batters was nearly one year ago on April 9th 2021 against Edmonds.  Offensively the Trojans got hits when it mattered most, led by Isabelle Hansen's 5 RBI's on 3 of 6 hitting, including a double and a home run, just missing the triple to complete the cycle.  Charis Jones had a good game at the plate going 3 for 6 and scoring 2 runs and Madison German had a solid game going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.

The win solidifies a T-Trophy victory for Everett over Edmonds in the annual rivaly cup where the two schools go head to head in 9 different sports.  Everett also improves to 18-4 overall with a 9-1 North Region record and sits at #5 in the RPI rankings.  Everett was also ranked #3 in the NWAC Coaches poll.  The  Trojans will get a couple days rest before facing off with Edmonds this weekend.  Game times are set for 11am and 1pm on Saturday, April 16th at Gaffney Field in Everett.
