New Era Looks Good in Scrimmage

Everett, WA - The new era of Trojan basketball got a first look on Saturday afternoon in a scrimmage versus Northwest Indian College.  After 33 seasons, former head coach Chet Hovde announced his retirement last spring and for the first time in three decades, the women's basketball team had a new leader on the sidelines.  Coach Jeannie Thompson has had six weeks of practice with her new team, one composed of entirely freshman, though fourreturn from last years abbreviated COVID-19 season that won the north region championship. While the game does not count for standings or statistics, it gave the 2021-2022 squad a chance to gel the four returners with 10 incoming freshman together and identify areas to work on.  The team also got a huge confidence boost winning the scrimmage by a final score of 91-36 on 48% shooting from the floor and holding the opponents to just over 27% shooting.  The Trojans also combined for 58 rebounds, 25 assists, and 14 steals.

Returning redshirt freshman Sydney VanNess lit up the scoreboard with 29 points on 13 of 19 shooting and fellow returners Mikail Montez added 10 points/13 rebounds while Monet Rundle chipped in 7 points and 6 steals.  Newcomers Maddy Thoma and Kendall Carroll had impressive debut's. Thoma hauled in 13 rebounds, scoring 7 points, and dishing out 5 assists while Carroll shot 7-10 from the floor with 16 points off the bench.

The Trojans will open up the season on the road at the Titan Classic Tournament, playing on November 19th and November 20th.  They'll face the host Tacoma CC Titans on 11/19 and Highline College the next day.  Everett has their first home game tentatively planned for November 29th against Douglas College.  The Canadian border continues to have complicated COVID-19 protocols that may ultimately prohibit that game from happening.  If that is the case, the first home game would then not be until December 3rd, the opening day of the Everett CC Women's Basketball Classic where the Trojans are set to take on Clackamas CC of Oregon City, OR.
