One Point Road Loss Has Little Impact on Playoffs

Mount Vernon, WA – Women's hoops was in action this weekend in their final road game of the 2021-2022 season.  The Trojans clinched a berth in the playoffs but are playing for positioning with a shot of securing the third seed if they could win the final two regular season games.

Despite being eliminated from the playoffs Skagit Valley has played good basketball of late, riding a two-game win streak.  Skagit took the early lead after the first quarter at 14-10.  Seven first quarter turnovers and 21% shooting from the floor contributed to the slow start, but a better 2nd quarter defensive effort helped EvCC climb back into the game, holding SVC to 8 points and heading into the break it was a 22-22 tie.  Thuyvi Tran led the Trojans with 8 first half points and 4 rebounds.

After falling behind by as much as four within the first minute and a half of the 3rd, EvCC went on a 13-2 run and finished out the quarter with a three-point lead.  In the final quarter, Everett held the lead for much of it but turnovers plagued EvCC.  The Trojans had the ball and a one point lead, yet after a questionable offensive foul called against Everett gave the ball back to Skagit, the Cardinals hit a shot with two seconds to go to take a 48-47 lead which would hold and give SVC a moral victory.

Sydney VanNess led the Trojans with 11 points, and ThuyVi Tran tied a season high 10 points.  Mikail Montez finished with 6 points, but posted 13 rebounds, putting her at 344 for her career and moving up to 9th on the EvCC All-Time Career Rebounding list.

The loss, moves Everett to 4th in the standings, and now a game behind Shoreline.  However, an Everett win next Wednesday at home against Whatcom, and a Shoreline loss would still put Everett at 3rd since EvCC would hold the tiebreaker over Shoreline.  That will be the final regular season home game in which the five sophomores will be recognized.  Tip off is set for next Wednesday at 5pm.
