#5 Pirates defeat Everett

#5 Pirates defeat Everett

Everett, WA – Women's Basketball was in action on Wednesday night to open up the month of February on Larry Walker Court.  The Trojans decimated by injuries were in search of their first north region win, and it would be a tall task facing the 5th ranked Peninsula Pirates.

The Pirates returned a roster laden with experienced sophomores that won the north region title a season ago and also advanced to the NWAC Championship game in which they lost in overtime on a last second shot.

Despite shooting 3 of 13 from the field and turning the ball over 11 times, the Trojans only found themselves down by five after the first quarter of play.  The Pirates got off 25 shots, but had difficulty finishing shots as well and shot just 24% from the field.

Everett still had some difficulty with the Peninsula full court pressure, but hit several key shots from beyond the arc, two from Maddie Thoma and another from Mia Jones who had hit one back in the first quarter to keep the game within reach.  The turnover bug hit again in the final five minutes of the quarter and a 12-0 run shot the Peninsula lead up to 16 by the halftime buzzer.

Peninsula didn't let off the gas, and blew the game open in the 3rd quarter.  Everett went cold again and Peninsula used a 23-3 3rd quarter to take a 57-21 lead.  All three of EvCC points came from the free throw line.

The Trojans got the first bucket of the 4th quarter with a scoop and score from Maddie Thoma and Grace Trichler hit a three on the next possession, but Peninsula answered each time on the other end to stop any thoughts of cutting into the deficit.  EvCC did have their best offensive quarter of the game, scoring 20 points, led by Thoma's 7 and 6 more from Trichler.  Thoma led the Trojans with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Everett will get some much-needed rest now halfway through north region play.  The next game will be on February 8th on the road at Skagit Valley College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
