Home Opening Win, and a Split in Spokane

Home Opening Win, and a Split in Spokane

Everett, WA - The Trojan volleyball team continues to show signs of a team that will make a run for the playoffs in 2022.  Last week, Everett hosted Tacoma in a single match for the home opener and did not disappoint the home crowd, taking the match in three sets.   Freshman Malia Shepherd led the way offensively recording 13 kills and also led with 13 digs on a .276 hitting efficiency.  Denna Gibb pitched in 12 digs defensively and returning team MVP from last season, sophomore Erin Ingram recorded 9 kills and 8 digs.  Setters Jayda Grosboll (sophomore) and Katie Serles (freshman) tallied 14 and 10 assists respectively.

Over the weekend, Everett traveled to Spokane to face another host of quality opponents in North Idaho, Rogue, Southwestern Oregon, and Spokane.  On the first day, Everett faced off with NIC, a team that was 4-0 at the time.  EvCC dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-18.  They rallied in the third set 25-14, but were over powered in the fourth by a score of 25-10.  In the second match, Everett faced Rogue in a rematch from the previous weekend where the Trojans came out on top 3-2.  The two teams looked even splitting the first two sets, but Everett went on to claim sets three and four by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.

On the final day, EvCC perhaps had a little trouble waking up for an early morning match and dropped to Southwestern Oregon in three sets, but rebounded to defeat host Spokane in four with final scores of 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, and 25-15.  It was an offensive explosion in the final match by Malia Shepherd and Erin Ingram, set up by an amazing 43 assist performance by Jayda Grosboll.  Ingram recorded 16 kills, only to be slightly outdone by Shepherd who recorded 17 kills.  Defensively three Trojans tallied double digit digs, Camille Clarke (10), Shepherd (10), and Annika Jones (11).

For her performance over the week, Malia Shepherd was recognized as the NWAC north region offensive player of the week, totaling totaling 50 kills, 37 digs, and 10 aces.

The Trojans will prep for another weekend tournament, this one closer to home where they will travel 11 miles to the south to Edmonds College with matches set up against Yakima Valley, Pierce, Centrailia, and a preview of north region opponent Bellevue.  Match times are set for 2:00pm and 4:30pm on Friday, September 9th followed by 10:00am and 3:00pm on Saturday, September 10th.
