Women Win Northwest Region Title

Women cross country team celebrates with the region trophy

Lakewood, WA - The women's cross country team placed all five scoring runners inside the top 10 at the Northwest Region Championships, and took home the program's 5th title in the past 10 years.  On the campus of Lakewood High School, the site of the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational and the District 1 High School Championships, Sophomore Emma Arceo won the 5k meet with a time of 20:22 and posted a new PR of over 15 seconds.  The next finisher from EvCC was not until 6th place (Angelina Pamatian), but EvCC went on to take 7th (Isabelle Gutierrez), 8th (Jessica Henry) and 10th (Elizabeth Weatherhogge) to score 28 team points, and win the meet by 17 points over second place Olympic College.  Pamatian PR'd by 23 seconds, as did Weatherhogge by 23 seconds, Henry by 42 seconds, Cassandra Smith who placed 15th overall by 18 seconds and a huge PR from Gutierrez by one minute and three seconds.  Arceo led the entire way and finished strong on a course that she remembers well from her high schools days at Kamiak.

The men's 8k race was won by Green River College, but the Trojans made it close with a 3rd place finish from Blake Wayman who shaved off 7 seconds from his previous personal best of 27:07.2.  Another freshman, Yahir Marban was close behind finishing in 4th with a time of 27:03.6.  Sophomore Vitalii Shvets ran a good race, finishing 9th and beating out two Green River competitors that finished faster than him back on September 30th at the John Payne Invitational.  Unfortunately for the Trojans an error in running the course created a DQ, and prevented EvCC from posting a full team score, but Moses Martin was the 4th finisher for EvCC and continues to get faster with each race. He improved his 8k time once again, this time by two minutes and five seconds, and beat out three runners from Edmonds.

Everett will have two weeks to prepare for the final meet of the season, the NWAC Championships.  Both the men and women have an opportunity to score well against solid competition.  The meet will be held on November 11th, in University Place, WA at Chambers Creek Park.  The men will race first in the 8k at 11am followed by the women's 5k.
