Rivalry Night Win for Trojans

Rivalry Night Win for Trojans

Everett, WA - Women's soccer picked up a north region win on Wednesday evening, earning them three points in the north region standings, and perhaps just as importantly a half point towards the coveted T-Trophy standings.  A season ago EvCC women's soccer did not have the opportunity to contribute to the T-Trophy due to the fact that Edmonds did not field a team in 2022.  But here in 2023 the Trojans showed out in their north region home opener against the rivals, 11 miles south.  Sophomore Emily Marriott scored first, and her first goal of the season and her first goal as a Trojan since she played her freshman season back in 2019.

The Trojans dominated the first 20 minutes of action and led 1-0, until a failed clearance gave Edmonds hope and equalized the game in the 24th minute.  But the Trojans did not waiver and eleven minutes later, Emily Morandi controlled a throw in from Gadi Zesati and fired a beautiful shot from outside the 18 to beat the Edmonds goalkeeper and put EvCC back on top.  Everett kept the Triton defense busy earning 12 total shots in the first half, forcing the keeper to make four saves.

Marriott would strike again just moments into the start of the second half, when she tackled the ball away from an Edmonds defender, beat another inside the box, and then found the back of the net to put the Trojans up 3-1.  The goal re-established the tone for the second half and Everett continued to dominate posession.  The Triton offense mustered only two shots the entire second half, forcing only one easy save from freshman goalkeeper Ruby Wacker.

The punctuation mark of the match came with Cassandra Sotelo's first career goal in the 72nd minute.  Sotelo had many other opportunities to score with five shots on goal for the game, but was able to get this one past on a brialliant strike off a Paige Runcorn assist, her first of the season.

The Trojans move to 1-1 in north region play after the win and will face Bellevue College this Saturday.  The Bulldogs have a 3-1-1 overall record, with impressive wins over Whatcom and Shoreline, most recently beating Shoreline 13-0.  Match time is set for 12pm at Bellevue College.
