0-0 Stalemate on Sophomore Night

0-0 Stalemate on Sophomore Night

Everett, WA - In a highly anticipated match between Whatcom and Everett, with playoff implications on the line both teams showcased their defensive prowess, resulting in a goalless draw.  Close followers of both teams might have anticipated that the two teams could struggle to score as both teams rank among the leagues best in goals allowed per match, Everett at 0.87 for 4th in the NWAC and Whatcom at 1.18 for 8th in the NWAC.

The game was marked by intense battles in the midfield and solid defensive performances from both sides. Whatcom's goalkeeper, Justin Rodriguez, made impressive saves, stopping all four shots on target. On the other end, Everett's Avary Olson showcased his skills in goal, making two crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet for the 7th time this season.

Despite the defense, each team had a few opportunities to capitalize. Whatcom managed nine shots, with four on target, while Everett registered 14 shots, two of which were on goal. The goalkeepers and back line defenders proved to be the standout performers of the match, limiting nearly every scoring opportunity.

The Trojans' best chances came late in the match.  In the 75th minute, Emmanuel Nyaga beat a defender on the right side and took the ball to the near post before crossing over the defenders and finding a diving Muhammed Darboe who's header went just over the post.  Then in the 82nd minute Cristiano Whitaker had his best opportunity of the match with a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper.  The last real chance for the Trojans came in the 87th when Emmanuel Nyaga once again beat his defender and dribbled hard to the near post, but the Whatcom keeper cut off the angle and Nyaga's shot went just high.

While a win would have sealed a trip to the playoffs for EvCC, preventing the loss and securing the draw keeps Everett in the drivers seat and in control of their own destiny heading into the final match of the season.  EvCC will face Skagit Valley on Saturday, with both teams needing a win to get into the playoffs.  A draw or loss will mean the end of the 2023 season.  It was a thrilling 3-3 draw the last time these two teams met and will most certainly come down to the wire once again in Mt. Vernon.  Kick off is set for 2:15pm.
