Softball is EvCC's Team of the Year!

The 2021 Softball team was coached by assistants Dennis Mallory, Rick Smith, and completing his 18th season now with 389 wins, Randy Smith.    The Trojans opened up the abbreviated COVID season with a tough 2-4 loss in the bottom of the 7th inning to Bellevue, but then proceeded to rattle off ten straight wins and ultimately winning eight of their last nine games to finish with a total record of 20-4 and a top the North region for the first time since 2007.

Everett outscored opponents 186 runs to 76 and defensively was one of the top teams with a .972 fielding percentage (2nd in the NWAC), and an earned run average of 3.69 also 2nd in the NWAC.  In the circle, no team had a better duo than the Trojans with Kaylie Hoskins and Kayla Tuaoa.  Together they struck out 202 batters with a 9.68 strikeout average through 7 innings.  Both of those numbers ranked the best in the NWAC.

Offensively the Trojans were just as dominate leading the North region in runs scored, hits, triples, homeruns, RBI's, and walks.  Their .454 on base percentage ranked 8th in the NWAC and 1st in the North Region.

Several Trojans had impressive individual stat lines.  Kayla Tuaoa started every game at shortstop or pitcher, and led the north region in runs scored, hits, and doubles which was 2nd in the NWAC.  Mele Turner led the NWAC in walks drawn, and Izzy Hansen  led the North in home runs with 7.  Freshman catcher Maddie German played every inning behind the plate and was the only player in the NWAC in any position with a perfect fielding percentage. She also led the NWAC in runners caught stealing.

Freshman pitcher Kaylie Hoskins was as dominate as any pitcher in recent history, striking out an eye popping 173 batters in just 85 innings pitched.  She had 91 more strikeouts than the next closest pitcher and her K/7 average of 14.25 is the highest among all NWAC pitchers in the last decade. At 173 strikeouts she ranks 3rd all time at EvCC for single season strikeouts in only 15 appearances in the shortened season.   At the end of the year, she was one of 13 NWAC players named to the NFCA All-American List.

In addition to all of the accomplishments on the field this team also performed very well in the classroom.  Eight athletes made the academic honor roll, including three on the dean's list with 3.6 or higher GPA's.  The vast majority of the 15 person roster will be back next season to make a run at the program's first ever NWAC Championship.
