Tough Trip to Eugene

Tough Trip to Eugene

Eugene, OR - EvCC women's hoops returns home after a tough weekend in Eugene, falling in all three contests.  Kelsey Mellick, sophomore from Arlington, WA had a solid weekend averaging 20.0 points per game and shooting 46.2% from the floor.  She also led the team in rebounds with 7.0 per game.

The Trojans faced host college and #4 ranked Lane CC in the first matchup on Saturday.  Everett played inspired basketball in the first half building a lead by as much as 12 before going into the break with a 29-23 lead.  Lane battled back through the third quarter outscoring the Trojans 23-29 to tie the game up at 52 heading into the 4th quarter.  Kelsey Mellick and Hannah Hezekiah combined for 14 of EvCC's 18 4th quarter points but it was not enough and Lane prevailed with a 72-70 win.  Hezekiah had a step back three pointer at the buzzer to win it but the shot hit the front of the rim and bounced away.

Sunday night's contest was against a feisty Blue Mountain team that entered the game with an 0-8 record, but nearly all of their losses came to high quality opponents.  After a back and forth first half the teams entered the break with a 27-27 tie.  Everett was out rebounded in the first half 30-16 and the disparity grew as the game went on with a final rebounding total of 71-38 which included 27 offensive rebounds for the Timberwolves.  despite the rebounding advantage Everett held tough and forced the game into overtime before eventually falling 78-72.

The final match on Monday morning was against 5-4 Centralia College.  Once again Everett had a strong first half and held tight to a one point lead at the half but succumbed to a poor 3rd quarter shooting going just 2-18 from the floor.  The ball did not find the bottom of the net much easier in the 4th combining for just 3 of 19 shooting and Blue Mountain went on to win 67-46.

Everett will have the holiday break off before returning to action on December 28th where they will face Big Bend in the opening game of the Skagit Valley Holiday Tournament.
