Bellingham, WA - Everett was on the road Saturday afternoon to take on the defending north region champions, Whatcom Orcas who were 3-0 on the season entering the game. The Trojans were not intimidated and jumped out to an early 10-4 lead after back to back 3 pointers. Whatcom chipped away and the momentum would shift when Courtney Perry was forced to the bench with two quick fouls with about 4 minutes to play in the quarter. Despite trailing by as many as 7 in the first quarter, EvCC battled back to take a 22-21 lead at the break with a balanced scoring effort and 6 big points off the bench from Monet Rundle.
The 2nd quarter started out great when Sydney VanNess hit a jump shot, 10 seconds into the quarter, but from there it seemed as though a lid was on the rim, and Everett did not score again until the 5:26 mark on a Liz Frazier layup. The Trojans were outscored 11-19 in the 2nd quarter and went into the break trailing by 33-40.
Everett refocused after the break and came up with their best offensive quarter of the game, scoring 23 points. ThuyVi Tran scored 8 of her 13 points of the game in 3rd quarter thanks in large part to two made three point field goals. Whatcom held fast scoring 19 points of their own and it would be a 56-59 lead for the home Orcas going into the 4th quarter. Courtney Perry, battling foul trouble all game would pick up her 4th personal early on sending her back to the bench and taking away her rebounding and paint protection presence. Almost immediately the Whatcom offense re-ignited and was able steadily build out there lead and eventually walk away with an 85-70 win. Sydney VanNess led the Trojans with 19 points, and Mikail Montez added 11 points with 9 rebounds.
The Trojans will next play on April 28th on the road against 0-4 Olympic College. Tip off is set for 5pm.
