Everett, WA - Everett Community College hosted the 28th annual Everett Women's Basketball Classic over the weekend, and it would be #5 ranked NWAC powerhouse Clackamas Community College that would go 3-0 on the weekend, defeating Spokane, Skagit Valley and Everett CC. The Trojans struggled against the defensive pressure of the Cougars and were held to just 16 first half points. EvCC got off to a great start to open up the game scoring the first two buckets and and forcing a turnover. But the lead would be short lived, and by the 7-minute mark of the first quarter, Clackamas reclaimed the lead. By halftime it was a 35 point lead, and after all four quarters Clackamas won it going away 83-35. Alaina Spoonhunter scored 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting and Selena Espinoza played solid defense with 6 points and 4 steals. EvCC's leading scorer Jada Andresen scored 9.
On the final day of the weekend, EvCC played Spokane, who suffered two narrow losses, the first one by three to Skagit Valley (66-63) and the second to Clackamas (75-66). Spokane started the game with much of the same defensive pressure that EvCC saw on the first day from Clackamas. The Trojans had three straight turnovers on their first three possessions before getting on the scoreboard. Espinoza had five of EvCC's 7 points in the first quarter. The Trojan offense was more productive in the second quarter, but so was Spokane's and the Sasquatch led 38-19 at halftime. Esponiza led EvCC with 7 points, and Eden Moore had 5.
Everett had another tough quarter to open up the second half, and Spokane expanded their lead. They continued that momentum to close out the game holding EvCC to just 27% shooting from the floor and won 73-38. Selena Espinoza had one of her best games of the season, setting a new career high in scoring with 16.
The Trojans schedule will not get any easier as they face Columbia Basin, Portland CC, and Lower Columbia College next weekend in Pasco, WA at the Columbia Basin Crossover Tournament. EvCC's first game will be against host CBC on Thursday December 12th at 5pm.
