After several hours of rain delays the last two unbeaten teams in the 2019 NWAC Baseball Playoffs, finally squared off with a first pitch at 9:35pm on Saturday night. The last time Everett and Tacoma met was in the NWAC Championship tournament two years ago in a historical battle that lasted 15 innings, the longest in NWAC playoff history. Everett went on to win that game by a final score of 8-7 before advancing to the championship game where they took second to Lower Columbia College.
It was a battle of NWAC Baseball powerhouse programs in Everett CC and the hosts Lower Columbia College. The Red Devils and Trojans have a combined five championship game appearances in the last six years.
The #1 ranked Trojans entered the NWAC Baseball Championships coming off of a 35 win season, one of the most successful regular seasons in program history.
Second year head coach JoJo Howie earned North Region Coach of the Year honors, and freshman starting pitcher Zach Boswell was named North Region MVP. Nine other Trojans were named to either 1st team, 2nd team, or Gold Glove honors.
The Trojans entered the weekend with a 3 game lead over Edmonds in the North Region Standings for first place. That meant that Everett needed to win 2 of the 4 game series to clinch the program's 5th North Region Championship in the last 8 years.
Everett entered the series against Olympic as the 1st place team, ahead of Edmonds by three games in the North Region standings and the number one ranked team in the NWAC.
After the previous weekend of weather delays and postponements, the Trojans got back to the typical Saturday/Sunday, four game series against a middle of the pack Skagit Valley team.
The 4-game series with Douglas College (New Westminster, BC) began with a rain out postponement on Saturday up in Canada, and then a halted game due to rain on Sunday in Everett.
The Trojans hosted the University of Calgary Dinos this past weekend a ball club that competes in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference and came away with a 3-1 series win.
After a successful 4 game series against Yakima Valley in the opening weekend of the season, the Trojans looked for a repeat performance at home this past weekend with clear sunny skies at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Trojans finished the regular season in 2nd place in the North Region Standings, earning the right to host a 3-team, double elimination "Super Regional" playoff that would send the winner to Longview, WA for the NWAC Championships.
The Trojans got back to North Region play this week with a 4-game series vs Olympic College, hosting on Saturday 4/28 and traveling to Bremerton on Sunday 4/29.
